Beauty to me has an element of longing and melancholia to it, an element of substantive quality that causes a catch in the breath, and that is not without power. This raises it above the mundane and takes it into the realm of the heart and reverence. Perhaps that is why some ascribe beauty to the manifestation of divinity.

When an artist is expressing beauty, by that act of will they are blessing those around them - who are capable of being moved by that expression - into the realm of the heart and into the realm of quality. That conscious act of will, whether it is intended to or not, refines the human spirit, and as such is of incalculable value to society.

Artists have been with us since the stone age, and provide such an important service to humanity that they will always be with us.

We should value those who maintain standards of beauty.
